Not a fan of MailChimp and need to find an alternative email provider? That’s a rabbit hole that could suck you in for days! And hey, you have a business to run here, you don’t have time for research rabbit holes…

So rather than having you wade through a tonne of options and the pros and cons for a thousand different platforms, we’re going to help you make the right decision super quickly – so you can get it done and get back to work.

Because sometimes it’s just really nice when someone says, “Here’s the right tool for you”!

So let’s get started…

Finding the right email provider will depend on how serious you are about your email marketing.

If you’re just starting out in business and email marketing is perhaps quite low on your priority list – say you’re just thinking about sending out a single monthly or weekly newsletter – you could go with one of the providers that offer a free plan. Moosend, MailerLite, and Sendinblue are all decent options to get you started. Some of their free plans have more features than MailChimp’s free plan and some even have an ad-free option where you can get rid of that little logo on the bottom of your emails that tells everyone that you haven’t paid for it.

However, if you want to get serious about your email marketing – or suspect you’ll want to ramp things up in the not-too-distant future, you might want to think about switching to a slightly better platform, with better features, now. After all, moving platforms can be a bit of a pain once you’ve already set up a bunch of automations so keeping an eye on your long-term needs can save you a lot of time and hassle.

We have two recommendations here.

  1. ConvertKit

If you are a complete non-techie person and you’re after ease-of-use and a sexy interface then you can’t go wrong with ConvertKit.

We love ConvertKit; it’s automation features are great, really intuitive to use, and really powerful. Quite a few years ago, we actually did switch from MailChimp to ConvertKit and we found it saved us so much time in setting up our email marketing, building our automation, creating campaigns, and getting sales on autopilot.

And there’s even a free version of ConvertKit to get you started.

  1. ActiveCampaign

Our second recommendation is award-winning email provider, ActiveCampaign. We’ve actually just moved our membership over to ActiveCampaign and we’ve been completely and utterly blown away by its capabilities – it’s genuinely awesome!

Not only does ActiveCampaign have more automation features than ConvertKit and MailChimp, but the beauty of it is that it works as a CRM tool as well. So essentially ActiveCampaign has incredibly complex and powerful automations that help you get more sales to help you save more time AND it can help you manage and assign tasks to your team.

Another cool ActiveCampaign feature is that it can sync with your website, which means that if someone visits a page on your site, they could get an automatic email, they could get put into a sequence, or you could even choose to have them filtered out of a sequence. You can also automatically add and take people away from your Facebook custom audiences based on who’s in each list and you can even create automated tasks for your team based on the actions people are taking.  Isn’t that insane?!

ActiveCampaign is a bit more complex than ConvertKit, so it’s no surprise it’s more expensive. As we’re writing this, they don’t have a free plan. Their paid plans start at $50 a month but obviously the price goes up the more features you want and the more email subscribers you have.

In our opinion, though, we do think if you are serious about email marketing then you probably should be paying for it, so don’t discount a platform just because it doesn’t have a free plan. The features you get on a paid plan aren’t just a nice-to-have, they really are designed to get you more sales from your email list.  And when you pay for your email service provider, it actually gives you an added incentive to make the most of it and get your money’s worth.

Choosing an email provider essentially comes down to priorities.

If you’ve been watching our videos or reading our posts for a while now you know we’re advocates of not splitting your time. If you’re going to do something, do it really well. And if you want to do email marketing really well then we would recommend looking at an email service provider that has a tonne of cool features and will really make a difference to your sales figures.

Still can’t decide? Then check out this tool we’ve been geeking out over.

Head over to emailtooltester.com, which is a really thorough, regularly-updated site, and scroll down until you find the test option. As you go through the options, bear in mind what we’ve said about paid versus free plans, and answer the questions to find out the right email provider for what you’re looking for. Bingo! You’ve literally decided which tool to switch to in five seconds.

Hopefully you’re now much closer to making a decision on which email provider will work for you. But before you make the switch, there’s one vital thing you need to do first:

Check the integrations!

If you’re switching from MailChimp to another provider – any provider – check the integrations.

There’s nothing worse than getting halfway through the migration from MailChimp to your new platform before finding out that the new tool doesn’t integrate with your current tech stack. It’s an actual nightmare that’ll have you waking up in a cold sweat! So check whether it’ll integrate with things like your e-commerce platform and your membership plugin.
