This rule actually comes from our brand new talk that we debuted late in 2018. The feedback we had on this talk was like NO OTHER talk weâve ever done⊠so we wanted to share it with you here.
Basically⊠we wanted to solve the problem…
Why is so much content that you see published online from business owners PANTS? đ€
Letâs be honest⊠it is. A lot of social media profiles are like ghost towns a lot of blogs are half-assed, a lot of YouTube channels arenât updated⊠and we thought to ourselves⊠why do people bother⊠putting time and effort into doing something badly?
And it dawned on us⊠itâs because of cheesy Instagram quotes and sayings like:
âSomething is better than Nothingâ Or, âDone is Better than Perfectâ
But actuallyâŠ
Is Something actually better than Nothing when it comes to content marketing?
Actually NO itâs not!
If youâre trying to be on all the platforms and show up everywhere, then you just end up spreading yourself too thin and you end up saying, âOh Iâll post something today, thatâs better than nothing, at least Iâm getting myself out there, gotta be consistent!”
Publishing something rather than nothing basically means youâre creating something average, you havenât put your all into it.
This may give you a feeling of moving forward, or âdoing marketingâ – but itâs actually really bad for you, because quite frankly itâs wasting your valuable time.
Pete shared his metaphorical tree idea in this blogging tips video, and explained how if you only climb half way up the tree you wonât get the view from the top. The pay off comes when you reach the top, and publishing just âsomethingâ isnât going to get you to the top.
We say, either put in the effort to climb to the top, or donât bother climbing that tree đł
And in the 90:10 talk we made the argument that we have to stop publishing just âSomethingâ.
So what do we do instead?
How do you stop posting average stuff everywhere and find the time to climb to the top?
We analysed what other people and businesses and brands were doing that were having real success with content marketing. We found that instead of thinking something is better than nothing and spreading themselves so thin trying to do everything averagely⊠they focussed on doing ONE thing really well.
They didn’t try to keep up appearances on every platform .
The 90:10 Rule says this…
When it comes to content planning, spend 90% of your marketing efforts doing one thing remarkably well on one platform.
Spend 10% of your marketing efforts experimenting with everything else.
Hereâs what we want you to remember when youâre content planning: You donât need to worry about being everywhere IF you donât have the time and resources to be everywhere.
Remember, people and businesses who do have a successful podcast, video channel and Facebook page probably didnât grow them all at once⊠they grew them one at a time. Focussing on doing ONE thing remarkably well first before moving on and doing more.
When content planning… pick a platform
Whether thatâs your blog, your podcast, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, focus 90% of your marketing efforts on being present on those platforms remarkably well.
Thatâs how youâre going to see results with your content marketing.
