Remember: it’s not War and Peace
The first thing to remember when you’re creating your lead magnet is that it doesn’t have to be a 50,000 word thesis — bigger doesn’t always mean better. It could just be a short checklist, a report, or even a template.
The key thing is: does it solve a specific problem your potential customer is facing? In fact, if you can solve that problem more quickly, and with fewer words, you’re onto a winner.
3 easy ways to capture your content
Before we delve into the actual tools you’re going to use to design your lead magnet, let’s explore a few ways to capture the content you’re going to share.
- Think about the content you already have. Your lead magnet could be a compilation of your best blog posts, your best videos or podcasts, or even just some notes on your phone that you’ve been saving for a rainy day. It could even be a document you already have that could be turned into a template that your audience could benefit from.
- Use Google Doc’s voice dictation feature to take down your lead magnet. We love using this because it’s just so quick to do.
- Record yourself talking through something that you feel really, really passionate about. Or take one of your existing audio files and then get it captioned and transcribed using a service like QuiCC or Rev.com. These tools will quickly transcribe your audio for around $2 a minute, making it super speedy and easy to get those words out.
Our favourite lead magnet design tools
Now you have some content to work with, it’s time to make it look amazing!
Google Slides
Google Slides is criminally under-used; no one EVER talks about using it. But it’s awesome. When we first started growing our list we created all of our lead magnets in Google Slides.
It’s completely free, it’s easy to use, and it takes no time at all.
If you want to see for yourself, we’ve made a Google Slides template for you to use for your own kick ass PDF that you can use as a lead magnet. Download it here and then play about with it, adding your own content.
We’ve also included an eBook design for you to use — all you need to do is change the text, the colour, the font, and pop your own logo on it. Oh, and remember to add a final call-to-action at the end to help boost those sales.
Canva
Canva is another free tool that you can use for just about any design.
It has a tonne of templates built in for you to use ‘off the shelf’. You just have to pick the one that will work best for your lead magnet and then switch up the branding, adding your own logo, colours, fonts etc, to make it look a bit more professional.
Again, we have our own eBook style templates for you to access. And if you’d like an in-depth tutorial on how to use Canva, drop a note in the comments and we’ll stick it on our to-do list.
Designrr
The third tool we’re recommending isn’t technically free but we do have a link for you to get a seven-day trial. But if you use it to create your first lead magnet and totally love it as much as we do, it’ll only cost you $29 a month. And we reckon it’s worth it.
The cool thing about Designrr, and the reason we wanted to mention it even though it’s a paid tool, is because it does all the hard work for you, saving you a tonne of time that you could spend on other profit-promoting activities.
Literally all you have to do is upload your text and sit back while it turns it all into a super awesome PDF straight away. It’s definitely the fastest way we’ve found of making a lead magnet that still looks completely professional.
Creating your landing page
Now your lead magnet is in the bag, it’s time to create a landing page that’ll encourage people to give you their email in return for your amazing new PDF, eBook, or checklist. And there are three ways you could go about this stage.
- Create a brand new page on your website
This should be fairly simple to do, especially if you have a WordPress site like we do. One thing you’ll definitely want to do though, is disable your header and footer — you don’t want to distract people with too many places to click.
- Use your email service provider
If you use an email service provider like MailChimp, ConvertKit or AWeber, you’ll likely find inbuilt landing page software. It can be basic but you don’t need too many bells and whistles on a landing page anyway, so it’s all good.
- A specific landing page tool
The third option is to use a tool specifically designed for building landing pages, such as Leadpages. These tools aren’t usually free but they do come with a bunch of cool features like split testing, reporting, and lots of different templates you can adapt to your particular type of lead magnet, so you might find that it’s worth the cost, especially if you have lots of ideas for new lead magnets.
