Getting started – pick your template

Okay, so you’ve nipped over to Canva.com, created a free account, and logged on.

The first thing you need to do is pick a template for your lead magnet. And the great thing about Canva is that they have a bajillion different templates you can use (we know because Pete once spent a day counting them when he should have been doing the books!). So, whether you want to design an eBook, a brochure, a guide, or a checklist, you’ll find a template that’ll do the job.

Portrait or landscape?

Personally we prefer making our lead magnets landscape rather than portrait. Apart from the fact that they just look sexier, there’s an added bonus. If you decide to go with the landscape option, we recommend you go to the Presentations templates where you’ll find a tonne of pre-built templates, all in different styles that are easy to customise based on your content. All you have to do is click Apply All Pages and they will all whiz over to your canvas, ready for you to edit.

If you want to go portrait though, that’s cool too. We’d suggest going to documents and selecting the Report feature. The downside here is that there are only about three different templates to choose from so it’s much more limited than the landscape/presentations option.

Making it more ‘you’

Once you’ve chosen your template, the next step is to make it more ‘you’ by bringing in elements of your branding, like your colours and fonts.

Changing the colours is easy. You just click on the individual elements, click to select a colour change, and paste the Hex code (a six character code made up of letters and numbers) of your colour into the box. If you don’t know your Hex code, download the ColourPick Eyedropper extension in Google Chrome and then go to your website, select a browser extension and it will tell you the Hex code of any section you place your cursor on. Once you’ve pasted that into Canva, you can select which fonts you want to use for your heading font and your text body font. If you have a paid for version of Canva, you can upload your own fonts too, but if you’re on the free version try to find one as close to your fonts as possible.

A word of warning here: if you don’t have a design eye we’d recommend playing it very safe by sticking to your usual colour palette. And when it comes to fonts, it’s best to use a maximum of two fonts – one for the title and another for the body text – to keep a clean, consistent look.

Adding your content

Now it’s time to add your copy to the document.

(If you’re struggling for content ideas for your lead magnet, this video should give you some inspiration.)

Your lead magnet is going to be read online rather than printed so it’s a good idea to stick to one point per page. If you need more room on any given page, you can edit the template slightly to allow for that by adding, for example, additional columns; if you use the Alt button, you can click and drag items and duplicate them as you go. Just make sure you use the aligning features (those little pink lines that show up) to make sure everything matches up and looks tidy.

Once you’ve added all of your content, add in a final call-to-action page where you’ll include all of the information they need to find out more about your business or take the next steps to working with you.

Finalising your lead magnet

Once you’ve added your content, a call-to-action, and any photos or images you want to include, and you’re happy with how it looks, you’re ready to download.

To do this, hit the PDF Standard option and this will download your creation as a PDF, which you can then use as your lead magnet. Easy as that!
