1.Not spending enough time on sales
This one is sooooo common. We get it. You’re busy, right? You’re scheduling your social media content, writing proposals, dealing with referrals. And hey, that stuff kind of feels like you’re working on sales. Only none of it is bringing cash into the business right now.
We’ve fallen into this trap ourselves; we take our foot off the sales gas, focus on things that don’t have an immediate impact on our turnover and before long we realise that our sales have gone down.
So what’s the answer?
The way to beat this particular block is to schedule sales in your diary 📆
Depending on your business model you can do this in different ways. If you need a steady stream of customers, it might be something you need to do every single week for a couple of hours. For people like us, who’re running membership sites, you might want to have a monthly push for new members.
2.You don’t know what ‘getting sales’ actually looks like
Okay, so telling you to fill your diary with sales activities is only useful if you know what sales activities actually look like. And if you’re just starting out, or if you’ve been relying on referrals, it can be hard to know exactly what you should be doing.
This is one of the Entrepreneur Catch 22s we talk about:
I’M not getting ENOUGH sales > because I’M not prioritising it > because I DON’T KNOW WHAT I SHOULD BE DOING > BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW WHAT WORKS > BECAUSE I’M NOT GETTING ENOUGH SALES
So, let’s try to break this cycle.
Of course every business is unique so there’s no one-size-fits-all answer here but as the old cliché goes, ‘do more of what works’. Start measuring where every sale comes from, as well as trying out new tactics and measuring the results of those. Eventually you’ll see a pattern and you’ll be able to fill your diary with tried and tested sales activities.
And if you’re struggling for inspiration, our £7 Get a New Client Challenge has over 70 ways for you to get more business. You can sign up here and get your money back if you haven’t gained a new client after 30 days.
3.You’re not explaining what you do well enough
This is a huge struggle for a lot of service based businesses, particularly if you’re not explaining what you do in a way that:
- Succinctly gets across your offer in a clear to understand way
- Paints all the benefits as well as the features
- AND makes buying your thing sound actually EXCITING
Again we tackle this head on in the 30 Day Get a New Client Challenge but here are 3 tactics you can try right now:
- Make a list of reasons WHY someone might want to buy your offer based on the problem they have right now.
- Write a paragraph about what life will be like after somebody buys your product/service (don’t get too cheesy with that one!)
- Come up with 3 reasons why buying from you over your competitors is the obvious choice.
These 3 questions are pivotal and if you don’t know the answers off the top of your head, you’re going to struggle with sales.
4.Confidence
For some people, we know this is a HUUUUGE block, and if it affects you it’s almost certainly holding you back from the number of sales you could (should!) be getting.
Lack of confidence can make it impossible to put yourself out there, chase people up, big yourself up, make sales calls, handle rejection and persuade people how awesome your product/service actually is. And if you struggle to do all of those things, making your business work is going to be a constant battle.
Now, we know that there’s no quick fix for this one, but rest assured we’ve seen it done. And in the third part of this video series we’re going to devote an entire episode to helping you increase your confidence (without becoming an arrogant jerk!) to get more customers.
Don’t forget you’re not too late to take advantage of our £7 30 Day Get a New Client Challenge, which includes a free month of Atomic membership. So it’s £7 and a new client, or a full refund. Can’t say fairer than that!
