We all think we have a pretty good idea of which ingredients make up the recipe for a successful business.
Things like a good helping of SEO, or a generous sprinkling of Facebook posts…
But, after a decade of working with thousands of small business owners, we’ve discovered that the real recipe for success isn’t actually what we all think it is.
So in this post we’re sharing three areas that you most likely need to improve upon. We’re also giving you access to a comprehensive, free tool that’ll help you predict your future success and show you the key things that are holding you back from achieving more.
Let’s do this!
So, as the founders of Atomic, we’ve worked with a tonne of small but mighty business owners over the last 10 years and all the while we’ve been studying them (not in a creepy way!), analysing their activity, and researching what makes them tick, what makes them succeed, and what might cause them to be less successful than they’d like.
And the results are astounding!
Why? Because what we’ve discovered is that most of the things we tend to think are important — the stuff that marketers have been telling you to focus on since the dawn of time — usually aren’t the secret sauce they’re made out to be.
Which is why we’ve become absolutely obsessed with digging deeper and looking beyond the surface issues that usually stop people from growing.
For example, if a web designer wants to make more money they’ll seek out advice on how to make more sales and they’ll probably hear that, ‘hey, you just need to post more on your social channels’, or ‘you need to work on your SEO’.
But the real problem isn’t necessarily that they’re not posting enough on social media — it could be any number of issues that go much deeper than their Instagram habits.
For instance, maybe they aren’t charging enough so they’re forced to take on lots of low paying work which means that their diary is full to bursting and they don’t have any time left for marketing their business.
Or maybe they’re actually incredible at marketing themselves and they get loads of leads but every time they get into a sales meeting their confidence deserts them and they can’t close the sale.
It could even be that they’re all over the place with their scheduling and they have no time to do anything because they just aren’t organised enough.
When you dig a bit deeper, there are a tonne of potential things holding you back from the success you want — and generally we can categorise them into nine pillar areas.
So here’s the thing:
There isn’t a single recipe for business success
There isn’t one single thing that every business needs to do to hit their goals. The reality is that the recipe for business success lies in figuring out what you’re actually good at, which of the nine pillars you’re hitting every time, and — crucially — which could use a little work.
Because when you identify your weakest area, and focus on improving things there, you’ll eventually feel like a wild bird that’s been released from a cage and can finally soar into the sky. Or like you’ve been released from a ball and chain…or whatever metaphor works for you!
Basically, by working on your weakest link, you’ll get rid of the things holding you back and your business will really take off.
So let’s take a look at some of those pillars
As we’ve seen, sales is one — if you don’t know how to sell, or don’t feel comfortable selling, you’ll always have a barrier holding you back.
Organisation is another. If you’re not organised with your time then your business success and your business growth are always going to be stunted.
But let’s talk about another key pillar that we’ve found to be a really common one: focus.
A lack of focus can show up in different ways. It may be that you’re trying to offer too many things to too many different types of audiences. Maybe you get distracted easily, or maybe you find it hard to focus on one thing and so spread yourself too thinly and end up not doing anything particularly well.
Any one of those scenarios could massively hold you back. And of course the flipside is that working on your focus would dramatically make your business more successful.
So here’s the question:
Which of the nine pillars is holding you back?
It’s a cliché but it’s pretty damn accurate: you’re only as good as your weakest link. When you figure out which pillar is your weakest area, you can take action and focus on the one thing that will have the biggest impact on your future business success.
And we want to help.
So we’ve created the Success Predictor, a short, free assessment that will look at where you are now, predict how successful you are likely to be, and give you specific, personalised advice on how to make future success inevitable. It will literally tell you your weakest area so you know exactly what you need to improve upon and what to focus on next for the best chance of breaking free of that cage/ball and chain that’s been holding you back.
